Robert Peters is an American politician and organizational leader. He is a member of the Democratic Party serving in the Illinois Senate representing the 13th district. His district encompasses areas including East Side, Hyde Park, Kenwood, South Chicago, South Shore, and Woodlawn in Chicago. Peters began his term on January 6, 2019, succeeding Kwame Raoul, and has since been elected in both 2020 and 2024. During his tenure, he served as the Senate Chair of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus from 2021 to 2024. Currently, he holds the position of Majority Whip for the Senate Democratic Caucus, a role he has occupied since 2025. Beyond his legislative responsibilities, Peters is known for founding Coursing Justice and serving as Director of Institutional Response at GRACE. His leadership roles reflect a broad scope of engagement in political and community initiatives.
