Robert Edward Jenrick is an English politician who has served as Member of Parliament for Newark since a 2014 by-election. He was initially elected as a member of the Conservative Party and later joined Reform UK in January 2026. Throughout his political career, Jenrick has held multiple government roles, including Minister of State for Immigration from 2022 to 2023, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government from 2019 to 2021, and Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury from 2018 to 2019. In opposition, he served in the Badenoch shadow cabinet as Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Lord Chancellor from 2024 until 2026. Born in Wolverhampton, Jenrick attended St John's College, Cambridge, where he studied history, and the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied political science. He is qualified as a solicitor and has worked in corporate law with firms such as Skadden Arps and Sullivan & Cromwell in London and Moscow. Elected as MP following the resignation of Patrick Mercer amid a lobbying scandal, Jenrick served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to several senior ministers between 2015 and 2018. He was appointed Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury under Chancellor Philip Hammond in 2018 and became Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government in 2019, a position he held until September 2021. Jenrick returned to government in 2022, serving in roles related to health and immigration, but resigned from his immigration post in December 2023 over disagreements with the government's Rwanda asylum plan. After the Labour Party's 2024 victory, he sought leadership of the Conservative Party. In 2026, he defected to Reform UK and became the party's Treasury Spokesperson.
