Robert Falcon Scott was a British Royal Navy officer and explorer notable for leading two major expeditions to the Antarctic regions. His first expedition, the Discovery Expedition of 1901–04, established a new southern record by reaching latitude 82°S and led to the discovery of the Antarctic Plateau, the location of the South Pole. During his second venture, the Terra Nova Expedition of 1910–13, Scott led a party of five that reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912, shortly after the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen's team. Unfortunately, on the return journey, Scott and his companions perished approximately 12.5 miles from their base camp after a planned meeting with supporting dog teams failed despite his written instructions. Their bodies were found with the first Antarctic fossils ever discovered, which provided evidence that Antarctica was once covered in forests and connected to other continents through the discovery of fossils from the Glossopteris tree. Before his explorations, Scott held a career as a Royal Navy officer. His opportunity to lead an Antarctic expedition arose after a chance encounter in 1899 with Sir Clements Markham, then president of the Royal Geographical Society. Scott's commitment to Antarctic exploration became a defining aspect of his life; he remained dedicated to the field even after his death, which was marked by national memorials across the UK. Though he became a celebrated hero, assessments of his competence and character have evolved over time. Contemporary evaluations tend to view Scott more positively, especially after the discovery of his detailed instructions for returning from the South Pole and considerations of the severe weather conditions faced during the final days.
