Robert F. Kennedy was an American politician and lawyer who served as the 64th United States attorney general from 1961 to 1964 and as a U.S. senator from New York from 1965 until his assassination in 1968. He was a member of the Democratic Party and an influential figure in modern American liberalism. Born into the prominent Kennedy family in Brookline, Massachusetts, Kennedy attended Harvard University and earned his law degree from the University of Virginia. He began his career as a correspondent for The Boston Post and as a lawyer at the Justice Department. Kennedy resigned from the department to manage his brother John F. Kennedy's successful campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1952. He also worked as an assistant counsel to the Senate committee chaired by Senator Joseph McCarthy and gained national attention as chief counsel of the Senate Labor Rackets Committee, where he challenged union practices publicly. Kennedy was appointed attorney general at age 35 and served as an advisor during his brother's presidency, known for his advocacy for civil rights, the fight against organized crime, and involvement in foreign policy, including the Cuban Missile Crisis. After his brother’s assassination, Kennedy continued his public service and was elected to the Senate, where he opposed U.S. involvement in Vietnam and promoted legislation to address poverty. He was an advocate for human rights and social justice, traveling internationally and working with leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Cesar Chavez. In 1968, Kennedy was a leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination but was tragically shot in Los Angeles shortly after winning the California primary and died the following day.
