Rishi Sunak is a British politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 2022 to 2024. He previously held the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022 and has been a Member of Parliament for Richmond and Northallerton since 2015. Sunak was born in Southampton to parents of Indian descent who immigrated to Britain from East Africa in the 1960s. He was educated at Winchester College, studied philosophy, politics and economics at Lincoln College, Oxford, and earned an MBA from Stanford University as a Fulbright Scholar. During his career, Sunak worked for Goldman Sachs and was a partner at two hedge fund firms before entering politics. He supported the campaign for Brexit in 2016 and was appointed to various government roles, including Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Local Government and Chief Secretary to the Treasury, before becoming Chancellor. Sunak was elected leader of the Conservative Party and served as Prime Minister, during which he prioritized economic stabilization, inflation reduction, and foreign policy actions supporting Ukraine and Israel. His tenure included attempts to improve the economy and reduce NHS waiting lists, but also faced electoral setbacks and declining popularity. Following his resignation as Prime Minister after the 2024 general election defeat, Sunak became Leader of the Opposition and remains a backbench MP. In 2025, he took on a role as a part-time senior advisor at Goldman Sachs, reflecting his ongoing engagement in public and private sector activities.
