Richard Allen Epstein, born on April 17, 1943, is an American legal scholar recognized for his work on torts, contracts, property rights, law and economics, classical liberalism, and libertarianism. He holds the position of Laurence A. Tisch Professor of Law at New York University and serves as the director of the Classical Liberal Institute. In addition to his responsibilities at NYU, Epstein is a Senior Research Fellow at the Civitas Institute, a Peter and Kirsten Bedford Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, and a senior lecturer and the James Parker Hall Distinguished Service Professor of Law Emeritus at the University of Chicago.
Epstein's writings have significantly influenced American legal thought, as noted by James W. Ely Jr. He has been widely cited in legal scholarship, being ranked as the 12th-most cited legal scholar of the 20th century in a 2000 study published in The Journal of Legal Studies. In 2008, he was identified as one of the most influential modern legal thinkers by a poll conducted by Legal Affairs. Between 2009 and 2013, Epstein was the third-most frequently cited American legal scholar, following Cass Sunstein and Erwin Chemerinsky. A 2021 analysis by Fred R. Shapiro ranked Epstein as the fifth most-cited legal scholar of all time.
