Published in the January 1961 issue of Playboy magazine, 'Sardonicus' was later adapted into a screenplay by Russell for William Castle's film titled 'Mr. Sardonicus'. The story has been highly praised; American writer Stephen King described it as 'perhaps the finest example of the modern gothic ever written'. 'Sardonicus' was part of a trio of stories that included 'Sanguinarius' and 'Sagittarius'.
