Peter Thomas Taylor, born on 2 July 1928 and deceased on 4 October 1990, was an English football player and manager known for his extensive career in management alongside Brian Clough. Although his playing career as a goalkeeper was modest and mostly included reserve roles, Taylor gained experience and learned the game from Coventry City manager Harry Storer. He played for Coventry City, Middlesbrough, Port Vale, and Burton Albion before transitioning into management. Taylor was appointed manager of Burton Albion in October 1962, leading the team to victory in the Southern League Cup in 1964. He then served as assistant to Clough at Hartlepool United, helping to rebuild the squad, before moving with Clough to Derby County. There, they achieved notable success including winning the Second Division title in 1968-69, the First Division title in 1971-72, and reaching the European Cup semi-finals in 1973. After their resignation from Derby County, Taylor and Clough continued their partnership at Brighton & Hove Albion and later at Nottingham Forest, where they achieved significant successes. With Forest, Taylor contributed to winning promotion to the top flight, league titles, two European Cup victories, and multiple domestic trophies. Taylor retired in May 1982 but briefly returned to manage Derby County from November 1982 until April 1984. Recognized for his influence in football management, his legacy is commemorated with statues and renamed stadium stands. His death in October 1990 marked the end of a prominent career in English football.
