Peter Gunn is an American private eye television series that starred Craig Stevens as the titular detective and Lola Albright as his girlfriend, lounge singer Edie Hart. The series originally aired on NBC from September 22, 1958, to 1960, and later on ABC in the 1960–61 season. Created by Blake Edwards, who also wrote 39 episodes and directed nine, Peter Gunn is recognized as the first detective series featuring a character developed specifically for television rather than adapted from other media. The show is notably remembered for its music composed by Henry Mancini, including the iconic Peter Gunn Theme. This theme was nominated for an Emmy Award and two Grammys and has since been performed and recorded by numerous jazz, rock, and blues musicians. During its broadcast run, the series achieved commercial success, ranking number 17 in the Nielsen ratings for the 1958–59 television season and number 29 for the 1960–61 season.
