Frederick George Peter Ingle Finch was an English and Australian actor born in London on September 28, 1916. He emigrated to Australia at the age of ten and was raised in Sydney, where he initially worked in vaudeville and radio before becoming a star of Australian films. Following World War II, Finch joined the Old Vic Company in Britain, where he achieved widespread critical success for both stage and screen performances. He became one of the most celebrated leading men in British cinema, earning five BAFTA Awards for Best Actor. His notable film role includes portraying the televiion anchorman Howard Beale in the 1976 film Network, a performance that garnered him the Academy Award in the same category. Finch passed away on January 14, 1977, only two months before the 49th Academy Awards, becoming the first person to win a posthumous Oscar in an acting category. The British Film Institute has noted that Finch's career included an extensive and rewarding list of roles in British films, and his awards support the recognition he received within the industry.
