Peter Dutton: podcast appearances and interviews
Australian Opposition Leader
About Peter Dutton
Peter Craig Dutton, born on 18 November 1970, is an Australian former politician who served as the leader of the Opposition and the leader of the Liberal Party from 2022 to 2025. He was the member of Parliament for the Queensland division of Dickson from 2001 to 2025. Dutton previously held various ministerial positions in the Howard, Abbott, Turnbull, and Morrison governments. He grew up in Brisbane and initially worked as a police officer in the Queensland Police force for nearly a decade after leaving school. Subsequently, he ran a construction business with his father. Having joined the Liberal Party as a teenager, he was elected to the House of Representatives at the age of 30. Following the 2004 election, Dutton served as Minister for Employment Participation. In January 2006, he was promoted to Assistant Treasurer under Peter Costello. After the 2007 election, which saw the Liberal-National Coalition defeated, Dutton was appointed to the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Minister for Health, a role he maintained for six years. With the Coalition's victory in 2013, he was appointed Minister for Health and Minister for Sport. In December 2014, he became Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, overseeing Operation Sovereign Borders. He retained this role after Malcolm Turnbull replaced Tony Abbott as Prime Minister in September 2015 and was later appointed Minister for Home Affairs in December 2017. Dutton was viewed as a leading figure within the conservative faction of the Liberal Party and challenged Malcolm Turnbull unsuccessfully for leadership in August 2018. Following Scott Morrison's leadership victory, Dutton served as Minister for Home Affairs, Minister for Defence, and Leader of the House before succeeding Morrison as party leader after the 2022 election. He was the first Queensland-born Liberal leader and the first since Alexander Downer to represent a seat outside New South Wales. During the 2025 federal election, Dutton led the Coalition to a significant defeat, and he lost his seat to Labor candidate Ali France, becoming the first federal Opposition Leader to be voted out in an election.
