Peter Dermot Doherty (5 June 1913 – 6 April 1990) was a Northern Irish footballer and manager. An inside-left player, he was regarded as one of the top players of his era and earned 16 caps for Ireland under the Irish Football Association. Doherty's playing career included stints at Coleraine and Glentoran, with whom he won the Irish Cup in 1933. Later that year, he transferred to the English club Blackpool before moving to Manchester City in February 1936 for a fee of £10,000. At Manchester City, he contributed to the club's first-ever First Division title in the 1936–37 season. World War II interrupted his career during his peak years; following the war, he transferred to Derby County, where he scored in the 1946 FA Cup final victory over Charlton Athletic, securing an FA Cup win for the club. Later, he played for Huddersfield Town. In April 1949, Doherty was appointed player-manager of Doncaster Rovers, where he was the top scorer during the 1949–50 season when the team won the Third Division North title. He managed the club through seven seasons in the Second Division before resigning in 1958. Doherty served as Northern Ireland's first national team manager from October 1951 to May 1962 and was instrumental in helping the team qualify for the 1958 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals. He managed Bristol City from 1958 to 1960, later worked as a scout for Liverpool, and was among the first group of 22 individuals to be inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.
