About Peggy Whitson

Peggy Annette Whitson is an American biochemistry researcher and astronaut affiliated with Axiom Space. She retired from NASA in 2018 after a distinguished career, during which she served as the 13th chief of the NASA Astronaut Office. Whitson holds the record for the most cumulative days in space by an American or a woman, totaling 695 days across various missions. Her first spaceflight was in 2002 as a crew member of Expedition 5 aboard the International Space Station. She later commanded the ISS during Expedition 16 in 2007-2008, becoming the first woman to hold that position. In 2009, Whitson became NASA's Chief Astronaut, the most senior position within the agency’s astronaut corps. She also became the first woman to command the ISS twice, with her 2017 mission lasting 289 days;the longest single spaceflight by a woman until Christina Koch's 328-day mission. Whitson holds several spacewalk records for women, including most spacewalks with ten, and the oldest woman to spacewalk at age 57. Her total extravehicular activity time is 60 hours and 21 minutes, placing her seventh overall in EVA time. She remains the oldest woman to orbit the Earth, a record she set in 2025 at age 65. After retiring from NASA, she became a consultant for Axiom Space and commanded Axiom Missions 2 and 4 in 2023 and 2025, respectively. Whitson was recognized as one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in 2018.
