His work in television includes appearances on programs such as BoJack Horseman, Mr. Show with Bob and David, Real Time with Bill Maher, and Best Week Ever which was later renamed Best Week Ever with Paul F. Tompkins. He has made over 200 appearances on the podcast Comedy Bang! Bang! and has hosted several other shows including No, You Shut Up! on the Fusion Channel, The Dead Authors Podcast, and hosted the online interview series Speakeasy with Paul F. Tompkins. He also hosted the Earwolf podcast Spontaneanation with Paul F. Tompkins, and The Pod F. Tompkast, which was listed as one of the top comedy podcasts by Rolling Stone in 2011. Additionally, Tompkins was a main cast member on the Superego podcast and was a regular on the Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast until its conclusion in 2015. Currently, he hosts podcasts such as Threedom, The Neighborhood Listen, and the independent Stay F. Homekins. As a voice actor, he portrayed Mr. Peanutbutter, an anthropomorphic yellow labrador, on the Netflix animated series BoJack Horseman from 2014 to 2020. His film appearances include dramas like There Will Be Blood and The Informant!. In 2021, he had a recurring role on the sitcom Rutherford Falls.
