Paul Franklin Dano, born on June 19, 1984, is an American actor and film director known for his work in both independent films and major blockbusters. His career began with his acting debut in the film L.I.E. in 2001. He gained wider recognition for portraying Dwayne Hoover in Little Miss Sunshine in 2006 and received a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his roles as Paul and Eli Sunday in the period drama There Will Be Blood in 2007. Dano has appeared in supporting roles in mainstream films such as Knight and Day, Cowboys & Aliens, and Looper. His performances in 12 Years a Slave and Prisoners in 2013 earned critical acclaim. In 2014, Dano portrayed Brian Wilson in Love & Mercy, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor. He starred as a convicted murderer in the 2018 Showtime miniseries Escape at Dannemora, earning a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor. In 2022, he played The Riddler in The Batman and a fictionalized version of Arnold Spielberg in The Fabelmans, receiving a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for the latter. Dano also made his directorial debut with the film Wildlife in 2018, which he co-wrote with his partner, Zoe Kazan. Additionally, he has written the comic book The Riddler: Year One.
