Paul Eugene Brown (September 7, 1908 – August 5, 1991) was an influential figure in American football, known for his contributions as a coach and innovator. He began his coaching career at Severn School in 1931 and later served as the head football coach at Massillon Washington High School in Ohio, where his teams lost only 10 games over 11 seasons. Brown's success at the high school level led to a position at Ohio State University, where he coached the team to its first national championship in 1942. He then became the head coach of the Cleveland Browns, a team he co-founded and for which the team was named. Under his leadership, the Browns won four AAFC championships and three NFL championships in 1950, 1954, and 1955. After being fired in 1963, Brown co-founded the Cincinnati Bengals in 1968 and served as their first coach. He retired from coaching in 1975 but continued as the Bengals' team president until his death. Brown was instrumental in pioneering several innovations in professional football, including the use of game film for scouting, establishing a full-time assistant staff, and creating strategies like the draw play. He also played a significant role in integrating pro football by bringing the first African-Americans onto his teams in the modern era. Brown's achievements earned him induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1967. His impact on the sport was recognized in 2025 when the NFL incorporated AAFC records into its official history, placing him seventh on the all-time wins list for head coaches.
