The first of these novels was inspired by a series of sensational murders in Richmond, Virginia, where many of the stories are set. Her work is recognized for its emphasis on forensic science, which has influenced subsequent television portrayals of police work. In addition to her fiction, Cornwell has made a notable claim involving the artist Walter Sickert, suggesting his involvement in the Jack the Ripper killings. However, most researchers do not consider Sickert a serious suspect, as evidence indicates he was in France for most of the year 1888 while the murders took place. Cornwell's books have achieved commercial success, with sales exceeding 120 million copies.
