About Pat McCrory

Patrick Lloyd McCrory, born October 17, 1956, is an American politician and businessman who served as the 74th governor of North Carolina from 2013 to 2017. He is a member of the Republican Party and previously served as the 53rd mayor of Charlotte from 1995 to 2009. During his time as mayor, McCrory served on the U.S. Homeland Security Advisory Council from 2002 to 2006 under President George W. Bush. He was the Republican nominee for governor in 2008 but was defeated by Democrat Bev Perdue. He was elected governor in 2012, becoming the first mayor of Charlotte to win the state's highest office and the first Republican to hold the position since 1988. In 2016, McCrory signed the Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act, commonly known as HB2, which restricted local anti-discrimination measures and mandated restroom use based on birth certificates. The law drew lawsuits from the U.S. Department of Justice and private citizens, as well as opposition from over 100 corporations, citing concerns over LGBT protections. Economists estimated HB2 negatively impacted North Carolina's GDP by between 450 and 630 million dollars, or 0.1 percent of the state's annual gross domestic product. The law was partially repealed in 2017 following McCrory's loss in the gubernatorial election. After conceding to Roy Cooper, McCrory continued to contest the election results with legal actions. He ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate in 2022 and refused to endorse Donald Trump in 2024, despite having supported him in 2016.
