About Pat Kane

Patrick Mark Kane, born on 10 March 1964, is a Scottish musician, journalist, and political activist. He is known as one half of the pop duo Hue and Cry, performing alongside his younger brother Greg. Kane is also recognized for his writings on political and cultural topics and has played a role in political activism, particularly advocating for Scottish self-government during the 1980s and 1990s. He was a founding member of the organization Artists for an Independent Scotland and served as Rector of the University of Glasgow from 1990 to 1993 after being elected in 1990, defeating veteran Labour Member of Parliament Tony Benn. Kane graduated from the university in 1985 with an MA in English. During his tenure as Rector, he contributed to the Glasgow University Guardian, where his column drew notable edits, including humorous alterations to references of Raymond Williams and Alvin Toffler. In the 1990s, Kane expanded into arts journalism, presenting live discussion shows for Channel 4 and BBC2, and earning a Sony Award nomination for his BBC Radio Scotland series Kane Over America, which finished third in its category. He was also a founding editor of the Sunday Herald newspaper and has contributed to publications such as The Guardian and The National. In 2004, Kane published The Play Ethic: A Manifesto for a Different Way of Living, promoting a philosophy he spreads through seminars, talks, and an online platform. He was previously married to Joan McAlpine, an SNP Member of the Scottish Parliament for the South of Scotland region.
