Patrick William Fitzgerald Jr. was born on December 2, 1974, and is an American football coach and former player. He is the head coach at Michigan State University. Fitzgerald previously served as the head coach at Northwestern University from 2006 until 2023. He was promoted to head coach at Northwestern following the sudden death of the previous head coach, Randy Walker, prior to the 2006 season. At the age of 31, Fitzgerald became the youngest head football coach in the Big Ten Conference and NCAA Division I FBS. He became the longest-serving head coach in Northwestern football history. As a player, Fitzgerald was a linebacker at Northwestern from 1993 to 1996. During his college career, he won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Chuck Bednarik Award twice, recognizing him as the best defensive player in college football. In addition, he received the Big Ten Medal of Honor in 1997 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008.
