Norman Milton Lear was an American screenwriter and producer whose career spanned over 70 years. He wrote and produced more than 100 television shows, including several influential sitcoms from the 1970s such as All in the Family, Maude, Sanford and Son, One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, and Good Times. His work was notable for incorporating political and social themes into the sitcom format, reflecting and addressing contemporary issues of the time. Lear received numerous accolades in recognition of his contributions to television, including six Primetime Emmy Awards, two Peabody Awards, the National Medal of Arts in 1999, the Kennedy Center Honors in 2017, and the Golden Globe Carol Burnett Award in 2021.
