Neil N. LaBute, born on March 19, 1963, is an American playwright, film director, and screenwriter. He gained recognition for his play In the Company of Men, which he also adapted into a film in 1997; this work received awards from the Sundance Film Festival, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the New York Film Critics Circle. LaBute has written and directed several films including Your Friends & Neighbors, Possession, The Shape of Things, The Wicker Man, Some Velvet Morning, and Dirty Weekend. His filmography also features Nurse Betty, Lakeview Terrace, and the American adaptation of Death at a Funeral. In addition to his work in film, LaBute has created television series, notably Billy & Billie, which he wrote and directed entirely, and Van Helsing. He has served as an executive producer and co-creator for Netflix's The I-Land, which he also co-directed and co-wrote.
