Miroslav Volf, born on September 25, 1956, is a Croatian Protestant theologian and public intellectual. He holds the position of Henry B. Wright Professor of Theology and serves as the director of the Yale Center for Faith and Culture at Yale University. Volf previously taught at the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Osijek, Croatia, during the periods of 1979 to 1980 and 1983 to 1990, and at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, from 1990 to 1998. Having studied under the German theologian Jürgen Moltmann and earned two advanced degrees, Volf is recognized as a 'theological bridge builder' due to his efforts to connect Christian theology with public life. His work emphasizes applying theological insights to areas such as culture, politics, and economics and often involves dialogues between different groups, including denominations, faiths, and ethnic communities. Volf has advised the White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and has co-taught courses at Yale, including one on globalization with former British prime minister Tony Blair. He is also a frequent commentator on religious and cultural issues in media outlets such as CNN, NPR, and Al Jazeera. His contributions to theology have been acknowledged through awards, including the 2002 Grawemeyer Award in Religion, and his 1996 book, Exclusion and Embrace, was named one of the 100 Most Influential Books of the Twentieth Century by Christianity Today.
