Michael Stephen Portnoy, born April 20, 1967, is an American musician recognized primarily as the drummer, backing vocalist, and co-founder of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. He played a significant role in shaping the band's sound over a 25-year period before announcing his departure in September 2010. Following his departure, Mike Mangini succeeded him as the band's drummer. In October 2023, Dream Theater announced Portnoy's return to the band, marking a notable development after his time away from the group. Throughout his career, Portnoy has been actively involved with numerous bands and musical projects.
