John Michael Mulvaney, born on July 21, 1967, is an American politician and media contributor. He served as director of the Office of Management and Budget from 2017 to 2020 and as acting White House chief of staff from 2019 to 2020. Prior to his roles in the Trump administration, Mulvaney served in the United States House of Representatives, representing South Carolina's fifth congressional district from 2011 to 2017. He also served in the South Carolina General Assembly from 2007 to 2011, initially in the House and later in the Senate. Nominated as OMB director by President-elect Donald Trump in December 2016, he was confirmed by the Senate in February 2017. During his tenure, he also served as acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from November 2017 to December 2018. Mulvaney is known for his fiscal conservatism, which was prominent during his time in Congress, including support for government shutdowns. His tenure as OMB director saw an increase in the deficit driven by spending and tax cuts, despite his reputation for fiscal restraint. As acting director of the CFPB, he reduced the bureau’s enforcement and regulatory powers. In January 2019, he assumed the role of acting White House chief of staff, during which he made statements regarding military aid to Ukraine. After resigning as OMB director and chief of staff, Mulvaney served as the U.S. special envoy for Northern Ireland until January 2021. In 2022, he was hired as an on-air contributor for CBS News, and has also contributed to NewsNation and CNBC, although his media roles have been subject to controversy.
