About Michelle Hanlon

Michelle Lea Desyin Slawecki Hanlon, born on August 8, 1965, is an American space lawyer and space law professor. She is the co-founder, president, and chief executive officer of For All Moonkind, a nonprofit organization established in 2017 to protect human cultural heritage in outer space. The organization has attained the status of a permanent observer to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and advocates for the development of protocols to identify and safeguard human history in space. Hanlon also serves as the Executive Director of the Center for Air and Space Law at the University of Mississippi School of Law, where she oversees the Master of Laws program. She has a role on the advisory board of multiple start-ups involved in commercial space activities, including orbital debris removal, remote sensing, and lunar resource extraction support. In 2021, she joined the Advisory Council of The Hague Institute for Global Justice Off-World Approach, which aims to develop flexible, inclusive space law to support future space endeavors. In March 2023, Hanlon announced the formation of the Institute on Space Law and Ethics, a nonprofit organization that will explore ethical considerations beyond existing international law in space activities. She is also the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Space Law and the Journal of Drone Law and Policy.
