Clifford Smith Jr., known professionally as Method Man, is an American rapper, record producer, and actor. Born on March 2, 1971, he is a member of the East Coast hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan and is part of the hip-hop duo Method Man & Redman. His debut solo album, Tical, released in 1994, reached number four on the Billboard 200. The album's single, I'll Be There for You/You're All I Need to Get By featuring Mary J. Blige, won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 38th Annual Grammy Awards. The song also charted within the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. In addition to his music career, Method Man has appeared in numerous films such as 187, Belly, How High, Garden State, The Wackness, Venom, Red Tails, Keanu, The Cobbler, and Bad Shabbos. He co-starred with Redman on the short-lived television sitcom Method & Red and has held recurring roles in three HBO series including Oz, The Wire, and The Deuce. He also appeared in the TBS comedy series The Last O.G. from 2018 to 2022. His stage name, Method Man, is a tribute to the 1979 martial arts film of the same name.
