Charley Wingate, known by his stage name Max B, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter from Harlem, New York. He gained recognition through his solo mixtapes titled Public Domain and the Million Dollar Baby series. Max B is credited with popularizing the term 'wavy,' which became part of the hip-hop lexicon and contributed to the wave movement within the genre. After serving sixteen years in federal prison, he was released on November 9, 2025, and subsequently returned to the music industry. His post-release work includes achieving notable chart success with the single 'Ever Since U Left Me (I Went Deaf)' featuring French Montana, which reached number one on Billboard Rhythmic Airplay and Mediabase Rhythmic Radio in 2026. Additionally, his appearance on 'Minks in Miami' with Rick Ross and French Montana reached the top of the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, marking two number-one records on different Billboard charts in 2026. Max B made his mixtape debut in 2006 and signed with Jim Jones' ByrdGang label; however, he parted ways with Jones in 2008 amid financial and ethical disputes, leading to a feud between their respective groups. He is associated with producer Dame Grease and rapper French Montana, with whom he collaborated on the Coke Wave mixtape series. In 2009, Max B was sentenced to 75 years in prison on conspiracy charges related to various crimes. He later secured a three-album deal with Amalgam Digital, releasing his debut album Vigilante Season in 2011, and in 2016 he took a plea bargain for aggravated manslaughter, before his release in 2025.
