Matthew Joseph West, born on April 25, 1977, is an American contemporary Christian singer-songwriter known for his contributions to the genre through both his solo work and songwriting for other artists. He began his career in the late 1990s as an independent musician, releasing three albums before signing with Universal South Records. His debut album, Happy, released in 2003, earned him multiple Dove Award nominations and featured the hit single More, which remained at No. 1 on the Christian Adult Contemporary charts for nine weeks. His subsequent albums include History and Something to Say, the latter producing chart-topping singles such as You Are Everything and The Motions. West’s career experienced a significant challenge in 2007 when vocal issues required vocal-cord surgery and a period of vocal rest. Despite this, he continued to produce successful music, exemplified by his 2013 album Into the Light and its single Hello My Name Is, which remained at No. 1 on the Billboard Christian Songs chart for 17 consecutive weeks. In total, West has released five studio albums and is recognized for songs like More, You Are Everything, and The Motions. Additionally, he has written songs for many Christian artists including Point of Grace, Mandisa, Natalie Grant, and Casting Crowns, as well as mainstream country performers such as Rascal Flatts, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Vince Gill.
