Matthew Avery Modine is an American actor and filmmaker born on March 22, 1959. He received the Venice Film Festival's Volpi Cup for Best Actor as part of the ensemble cast of Robert Altman's film Streamers in 1983. Modine played lead roles in several prominent films during the 1980s including Birdy, Vision Quest, and Married to the Mob. He gained additional recognition for his role as U.S. Marine James T. Joker Davis in Stanley Kubrick's film Full Metal Jacket. Throughout his career, he has appeared in other notable movies such as Pacific Heights, Short Cuts, Cutthroat Island, The Dark Knight Rises, and Oppenheimer. In television, he has portrayed characters including Dr. Don Francis in HBO's And the Band Played On, Sullivan Groff in Weeds, Ivan Turing in Proof, and Dr. Martin Brenner on Netflix's Stranger Things. Modine has been nominated twice for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television for his roles in And the Band Played On and What the Deaf Man Heard. He also received a special Golden Globe along with the ensemble cast of Short Cuts and has been nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor for his work in And the Band Played On.
