Matthew Curtis Painter, born on August 27, 1970, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is an American college basketball coach and former player. He is the head coach of Purdue men's basketball at Purdue University, a position he has held since 2005. Painter played college basketball at Purdue as a guard from 1989 to 1993, leading the team in assists during his senior year and earning honorable mention All-Big Ten Conference honors. His coaching career includes assistant coaching positions at Washington & Jefferson, Barton, Eastern Illinois, and Southern Illinois, where he contributed to the team winning consecutive Missouri Valley Conference championships in 2002 and 2003. Following this success, he became the head coach of Southern Illinois for the 2003–04 season, leading the team to another conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA Division I Tournament. Painter's tenure at Purdue has been marked by notable achievements including five Big Ten Conference titles, three Big Ten Tournament victories, and 18 NCAA tournament appearances, which encompasses nine Sweet-16 berths, three Elite Eights, a Final Four appearance, and a national title game appearance. Over his coaching career, he has mentored eleven players who advanced to the NBA, with three selected in the first round of the NBA draft. Painter has been recognized as Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year five times, ranking second all-time behind Gene Keady.
