Masih Alinejad is an Iranian-American journalist, author, and political activist born on September 11, 1976. Her career includes work as a presenter and producer at Voice of America Persian News Network, reporting for Radio Farda, contributing to Manoto television, and serving as a contributing editor for IranWire. Alinejad's work primarily focuses on criticism of Iran's human rights record, with particular emphasis on women's rights. She has received recognition for her efforts, including being named among Time magazine's Women of the Year in 2023. Residing in exile in New York City, she has been honored with several awards such as the 2015 Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy women's rights award and the Omid Journalism Award from the Mehdi Semsar Foundation. She is also the author of a memoir titled The Wind in My Hair, published in 2018, which recounts her experiences growing up in Iran and addresses issues faced by girls in her homeland. Alinejad has faced threats from the Iranian government, including alleged kidnapping and assassination plots according to U.S. prosecutors; she has also sued Iran in a U.S. federal court for harassment against her and her family.
