Marvin Pentz Gaye Jr. was an influential American R&B and soul singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. Known as the Prince of Motown and the Prince of Soul, he played a pivotal role in shaping the sound of Motown and soul music during the 1960s and 1970s. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Gaye's early career was guided by Harvey Fuqua, who introduced him to the group Harvey and the Moonglows. Gaye later embarked on a solo career after signing with Motown's Tamla subsidiary, achieving fame with hit singles such as How Sweet It Is to Be Loved by You, Ain't That Peculiar, and I Heard It Through the Grapevine. He also gained recognition as a duet partner with artists like Diana Ross and Tammi Terrell, recording notable songs including Aint No Mountain High Enough and You're All I Need to Get By. Gaye's 1971 album, Whats Going On, marked a significant artistic milestone and led him to break away from traditional production constraints, producing albums such as Lets Get It On, I Want You, and Here, My Dear. After a period living in Europe and leaving Motown for Columbia Records, Gaye returned in 1982 with the hit Sexual Healing, which became his most successful single and album. His performance of The Star-Spangled Banner at the 1983 NBA All-Star Game is also remembered. Gaye's career was tragically cut short when he was shot and killed by his father in 1984 on the eve of his 45th birthday.
