Martin Cooper, born on December 26, 1928, is an American engineer recognized as a pioneer in the wireless communications industry. He has made notable contributions to radio spectrum management and holds eleven patents in the field. In 1973, Cooper made history by placing the first public call from a handheld portable cell phone while working at Motorola, establishing a significant milestone in telecommunications history. He repeated this achievement the same year by leading the team that redeveloped and introduced the handheld cellular mobile phone to the market in 1983. Known as the "father of the handheld cell phone," Cooper’s work has been influential in the development of mobile communication technology, and he received the 2015 IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award for his contributions. Besides his pioneering work in telecommunications, Cooper is a co-founder of numerous communication companies alongside his wife and business partner, Arlene Harris. He is the co-founder and current Chairman of Dyna LLC, based in Del Mar, California. Additionally, Cooper contributes to industry standards and policy by sitting on committees supporting the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and the United States Department of Commerce. His leadership in creating and deploying the cellular portable hand-held telephone was recognized in 2010 when he was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
