Martha Wilson is an American feminist performance artist and a leader in women's ministry. She is the founding director of the Franklin Furnace Archive, an art organization dedicated to promoting artists' books, installation art, video, and performance art. Wilson has developed and created innovative photographic and video works that explore female subjectivity through role-playing, costume transformation, and the invasion of other people's personas. Her career began in the early 1970s while studying in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where she started making videos and photo/text-based performances. After relocating to New York City in 1974, she continued to develop her art practices, garnering attention for her provocative characters, costumes, and performances. Throughout her career, Wilson has received multiple awards and fellowships, including two National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship, an Obie Award, and a Bessie Award, recognizing her commitment to artists' freedom of expression.
