About Marshall Applewhite

Marshall Herff Applewhite Jr. was an American religious leader and the founder of the Heaven's Gate new religious movement. He was born on May 17, 1931, and died on March 24, 1997. Applewhite initially pursued a career in education, attending several universities and serving in the United States Army. He resigned from the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, in 1970 after an inappropriate relationship with a male student. His father's death in 1971 led to severe depression. In 1972, he formed a close partnership with Bonnie Nettles, a nurse, with whom he discussed mysticism extensively. They believed they were divine messengers and traveled across the United States starting in 1973 to spread their teachings. During this period, Applewhite operated a bookstore and teaching center. He was briefly jailed in 1974 for failing to return a rental car, after which he further developed his theological ideas. Applewhite and Nettles told their followers they would be visited by extraterrestrials and believed their bodies were merely human containers for their souls. Over time, their beliefs incorporated elements from Christian eschatology, the New Age movement, and popular culture. After Nettles's death in 1985, Applewhite faced a crisis of faith but continued to promote his teachings. He and his followers believed that an approaching comet, Hale–Bopp, harbored a spacecraft that would take their spirits to another planet. In 1997, Applewhite and his followers committed mass suicide, the largest in the United States, which drew significant media attention and academic discussion regarding his influence and manipulative skills.
