Marshall Belford Allen, born on May 25, 1924, is an American jazz musician renowned for his work in free jazz and avant-garde jazz. He plays the alto saxophone as his primary instrument and also performs on flute, oboe, piccolo, and the EWI. Allen is best known for his extensive association with Sun Ra, a leading figure in jazz, with whom he has recorded and performed since the late 1950s. Following Sun Ra's death in 1993 and the subsequent death of John Gilmore in 1995, Allen led the Sun Ra Arkestra. Critic Jason Ankeny describes Allen as one of the most distinctive and original saxophonists of the postwar era, highlighting his unique contribution to the jazz genre.
