Mary Marsha Blackburn is an American politician and businesswoman serving as the senior United States senator from Tennessee. She was first elected to the Senate in 2018 and is a member of the Republican Party. Prior to her tenure in the Senate, Blackburn served as a state senator from 1999 to 2003 and represented Tennessee's 7th congressional district in the United States House of Representatives from 2003 to 2019. During her time in the House, she was rated among the most conservative members by the National Journal. Blackburn is known for her support of the Tea Party movement and her strong alignment with President Donald Trump. She opposes abortion, same-sex marriage, and the Affordable Care Act. In November 2018, she became the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate from Tennessee, defeating Democratic candidate Phil Bredesen. She became Tennessee's senior senator in January 2021 following the retirement of Senator Lamar Alexander and assumed the role of dean of the state's congressional delegation after Congressman Jim Cooper's retirement in 2023. Blackburn was reelected to a second Senate term in 2024 against Democratic nominee Gloria Johnson. In August 2025, she announced her candidacy for governor of Tennessee in 2026.
