Mariana Francesca Mazzucato is an Italian-American economist and academic born on June 16, 1968. She holds the position of professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at University College London (UCL) and is the founding director of the UCL Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose. Mazzucato is renowned for her work on the dynamics of technological change, the role of the public sector in innovation, and economic theories of value. She has published extensively in innovation economics, value theory, and political economy, with recent focus on climate change and the triple planetary crisis. Her books include The Entrepreneurial State, The Value of Everything, and Mission Economy, and her latest work, The Big Con, co-authored with Rosie Collington, critically examines the consulting industry's influence on businesses, governments, and economies. Throughout her career, Mazzucato has emphasized translating economic ideas into policy and has held high-level policy roles. She is a member of the UNESCO High Level Expert Group on Ecosystem Level AI Governance and serves on the WEF Centre for the New Economy and Society Advisory Board. In 2019, she was appointed to the Presidential Economic Advisory Council of South Africa. Her previous roles include co-chairing the G20 Taskforce on Global Mobilization against Climate Change, co-chairing the Global Commission on the Economics of Water, chairing the WHO's Council on the Economics of Health for All, and serving as a member of various governmental and international advisory groups.
