About Marco Polo
Marco Polo (circa 1254 – 8 January 1324) was a Venetian merchant, explorer, and writer known for his extensive travels through Asia along the Silk Road between 1271 and 1295. His journeys are detailed in The Travels of Marco Polo, also known as the Book of the Marvels of the World and Il Milione, which provided Europeans with their first comprehensive insight into the cultures and societies of regions such as China, Persia, India, and Japan. Born in Venice, Marco Polo learned the mercantile trade from his father and uncle, Niccolò and Maffeo, who had traveled through Asia and met Kublai Khan. In 1269, the three set out together on a journey to Asia, reaching the Yuan dynasty's court where Polo gained the favor of Kublai Khan. He served as a foreign emissary, undertaking diplomatic missions within the empire and Southeast Asia, and lived in China for 17 years during which he observed many previously unknown customs and artifacts. Around 1291, the Polos traveled overland to Persia and later returned to Venice after a 24-year absence, during which Marco participated in Venice's war with Genoa. While imprisoned by the Genoese, he dictated his accounts of travel to Rustichello da Pisa. After his release, Marco Polo became a wealthy merchant, married, and fathered three children. His writings influenced European understanding of Asia's geography, cultures, and innovations such as porcelain and gunpowder, and inspired subsequent explorers and cartographers.
