About Malcolm X

Malcolm X was an American civil rights activist and Muslim minister known for his influential role in the civil rights movement and his affiliation with the Nation of Islam. Born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, he experienced a challenging adolescence marked by poverty, family disruption, and criminal activity. While in prison, he discovered the Nation of Islam and became its spokesperson in 1952. He adopted the name Malcolm X to symbolize his unknown African heritage and to reject his white slave master surname. As a prominent leader of the organization for twelve years, he advocated for black empowerment, racial separation, and criticized the non-violent approach of figures like Martin Luther King Jr. He also recognized some achievements of the Nation’s social programs. During the 1960s, Malcolm X grew disillusioned with the Nation of Islam and Elijah Muhammad, eventually embracing Sunni Islam after completing the Hajj to Mecca. He then adopted the name el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz and began to express a broader perspective on racial justice, traveling across Africa and founding new organizations such as the Islamic MMI and the Pan-African Organization of Afro-American Unity. His conflicts with the Nation intensified, and he received death threats leading up to his assassination on February 21, 1965, in New York City. Three Nation members were convicted of his murder, with some convictions later vacated. Malcolm X's legacy is commemorated through Malcolm X Day, memorials, and numerous renamed streets and schools. His autobiography, developed with Alex Haley, was published shortly after his death.
