Lupita Nyong'o is an actress and supporter of various social causes. She was born in Mexico City on March 1, 1983, to Kenyan politician Anyang' Nyong'o and was raised in Kenya from the age of three. She earned a bachelor’s degree in film and theatre studies from Hampshire College and later pursued a master's degree in acting at the Yale School of Drama. Nyong'o began her career in Hollywood as a production assistant and made her acting debut in the short film East River in 2008. She gained widespread recognition for her role as Patsey in the film 12 Years a Slave (2013), which earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She made her Broadway debut in the play Eclipsed in 2015, earning a Tony Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play. Nyong'o has appeared in several notable films including the Star Wars sequel trilogy as Maz Kanata, the Marvel Cinematic Universe film Black Panther and its sequel as Nakia, as well as horror films such as Us and A Quiet Place Day One. She has also voiced Raksha in The Jungle Book and starred in animated and live-action projects. Beyond her acting career, she is known for her advocacy in historic preservation, women's rights, animal rights, and efforts to prevent sexual harassment. She authored the children's book Sulwe in 2019, which became a New York Times Best-Seller, and has received nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards for narration work. Nyong'o was named one of Africa’s 50 Most Powerful Women by Forbes in 2020.
