George Noel Gordon Byron, 6th Baron Byron, was a British poet and a prominent figure of the Romantic movement. He is considered one of the greatest British poets and is known for works such as the lengthy narratives Don Juan and Childe Harold's Pilgrimage. His poetry includes many shorter lyrics, notably in Hebrew Melodies, which achieved popularity. Byron was educated at Trinity College, part of the University of Cambridge, and after graduation, he traveled extensively across Europe. He spent seven years living in Italy, residing in cities such as Venice, Ravenna, Pisa, and Genoa. Byron was compelled to leave England following threats of lynching, which led to his exile in Italy. During his time in Italy, he often visited his friend and fellow poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. Later in his life, Byron became involved in the Greek War of Independence, fighting against the Ottoman Empire. His efforts in the war have led Greeks to regard him as a folk hero. Byron died at the age of 36 in 1824 from a fever contracted while leading a campaign during the sieges of Missolonghi.
