Landon Timothy Donovan, born on March 4, 1982, is an American former professional soccer player and coach. He made 157 appearances for the United States national team and is widely regarded as one of the greatest American soccer players of all time. Donovan held the record as the all-time top assist provider in international football with 58 assists until 2023 and is tied with Clint Dempsey for the most international goals scored by a male U.S. player, with 57. Throughout his club career, Donovan achieved significant success, winning a record six Major League Soccer Cups and becoming the league’s all-time assists leader with 136. His achievements earned the MLS MVP Award to be renamed in his honor. An early product of IMG Academy, Donovan signed with Bayer Leverkusen in 1999, and much of his early club career involved loan spells with the San Jose Earthquakes, with whom he secured MLS Cups in 2001 and 2003. He transferred permanently to Los Angeles Galaxy in 2005, winning additional MLS Cups and earning the Golden Boot in 2008. In 2009, Donovan was loaned to Bayern Munich, and in 2010 and 2012, he had short-term loans with Everton in the Premier League. He also played for Club León in Mexico and the San Diego Sockers in the Major Arena Soccer League before retiring in 2014. Donovan's international career highlights include participation in multiple World Cups, where he became the highest-scoring American in World Cup history, and winning four CONCACAF Gold Cup titles. He was named to the FIFA World Cup All-Star Team and received numerous individual awards. In 2023, Donovan was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.
