Lamar Joseph Odom was born on November 6, 1979. He is an American former professional basketball player who had a 14-year career in the National Basketball Association. During his time in the NBA, he played for four teams and secured back-to-back championships with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2009 and 2010. In 2011, he was named the NBA Sixth Man of the Year. Odom received national recognition during high school, earning Parade magazine's national player of the year honors in 1997. He played college basketball at the University of Rhode Island, where he earned all-conference honors during his sole season in the Atlantic 10 Conference before turning professional. He was selected fourth overall in the first round of the 1999 NBA draft by the Los Angeles Clippers and was named to the NBA All-Rookie Team the following year. His early NBA career included two suspensions for violating the league's anti-drug policy during his four seasons with the Clippers. Odom later played for the Miami Heat during the 2003-04 season before being traded to the Lakers, where he spent seven seasons.
