She previously worked as a nurse at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Northampton, Massachusetts. Gilbert was convicted of four murders and two attempted murders among patients at the medical center, where she was accused of inducing cardiac arrest by injecting lethal doses of epinephrine into intravenous therapy bags. Her actions often coincided with her responding to the emergency codes, where she would sometimes resuscitate the victims herself. Prosecutors indicated that Gilbert was present for approximately half of the 350 deaths at the hospital since she began working there in 1989, suggesting a statistical improbability of these events occurring by chance.
