Kim Campbell, born on March 10, 1947, is a Canadian politician known for serving as the 19th prime minister of Canada, holding office from June to November 1993. She is recognized as the first and only female prime minister in Canadian history. Before assuming the role of prime minister, Campbell held several significant cabinet positions under Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, including minister of justice and attorney general, minister of veterans affairs, and minister of national defence from 1990 to 1993. Her tenure as prime minister followed Mulroney's resignation amid declining popularity. Campbell's time in office lasted 132 days, making it the third-shortest in Canadian history. She was also the first woman to serve as minister of justice in Canadian history and the first woman to become minister of defence in a NATO member state. Her political career includes being elected to the British Columbia Legislative Assembly in 1986 as a member of the British Columbia Social Credit Party and subsequently to the House of Commons of Canada in 1988 as a Progressive Conservative. Campbell was the first baby boomer to hold the office of prime minister and the only prime minister born in British Columbia. Beyond her political career, she served as chairperson for the Canadian Supreme Court advisory board.
