Kent Beck is an American software engineer, author, and consultant born in 1961. He is recognized for creating test-driven development and founding extreme programming. Beck is also a co-creator of the JUnit testing framework and was one of the original signatories of the Agile Manifesto, a foundational document for agile software development. His work has significantly influenced the design, testing, and construction of software over more than three decades, establishing him as a prominent figure in software engineering. Beck pioneered the development of software design patterns and applied Smalltalk commercially, creating the SUnit unit testing framework for Smalltalk. This framework led to the development of the xUnit series, including JUnit for Java, which he co-authored with Erich Gamma. He also promoted CRC cards alongside Ward Cunningham, the inventor of the wiki. Beck’s contributions focus on the interplay between software architecture, human psychology, and economic value. Based in San Francisco, Beck has worked at Facebook and, as of 2019, joins Gusto as a software fellow and coach. In recent years, he has developed pattern-based problem-solving tools and explored augmented software development using large language models, coining the term "Genies" for AI coding collaborators.
