Katherine Moore Porter is an American politician who has served as the Governor of California. She was a U.S. representative from California from 2019 to 2025 and is a member of the Democratic Party. Porter was a candidate in the 2024 U.S. Senate election in California and the 2026 California gubernatorial election but did not advance from the nonpartisan primary in either race, placing third and fifth respectively. Born in Fort Dodge, Iowa, she graduated from Yale University and Harvard Law School. She was elected to Congress in 2018 as part of a Democratic wave in Orange County, flipping the 45th district. After redistricting in 2022, she was reelected to serve in the 47th congressional district. During her tenure in the House of Representatives, she served as deputy chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Porter gained media attention for her questioning during congressional hearings, often employing whiteboards and visual aids, which contributed to her reputation as a vigorous and formidable questioner.
