Elizabeth Ann Warren, born on June 22, 1949, is an American politician and former law professor who has served as the senior United States senator from Massachusetts since 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, she is recognized as a progressive and has emphasized issues such as consumer protection, equitable economic opportunity, and the social safety net during her time in the Senate. Warren was also a candidate in the 2020 Democratic Party presidential primaries, finishing third behind Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. Raised in Oklahoma, she graduated from the University of Houston and Rutgers Law School. Her academic career includes teaching law at several universities, including the University of Houston, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard University, with expertise in bankruptcy and commercial law. She has authored twelve books and over a hundred articles. Warren's engagement in public policy began in 1995 when she opposed a bill that would restrict bankruptcy access for individuals. Her profile increased in the late 2000s after publicly advocating for more stringent banking regulations in response to the 2008 financial crisis. She served as chair of the Congressional Oversight Panel for the Troubled Asset Relief Program and was instrumental in the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, serving as its first special advisor under President Barack Obama. In 2012, Warren defeated incumbent Republican Scott Brown to become Massachusetts' first female senator and was reelected in 2018. She announced her presidential candidacy in 2019 and withdrew in March 2020. In 2024, she was reelected to a third Senate term.
